Koen Moyson fleet manager at VPD

The drive behind our service: what makes our fleet so unique?

Koen Moyson, fleet manager at VPD, gives us insight into the many aspects of his role and VPD’s sustainable vision. Responsible for managing and expanding the fleet, he focuses primarily on vehicle electrification and innovation.

A diverse and dynamic role: the responsibilities of a fleet manager

What does your job as a fleet manager involve?

Koen: My role is very diverse. I handle quotes, maintain relationships with manufacturers, and attend events to strengthen partnerships. Managing such a large and increasingly eco-friendly fleet is very rewarding. The search for new brands and models is both stimulating and enriching. Every day is different, and that’s what makes this job so exciting.

The electric transition: a challenge for experienced drivers?

How are drivers adapting to the switch to electric vehicles?

Koen: For many experienced drivers, switching to electric vehicles is a real challenge, especially since they’re used to diesel trucks. It’s even more complex for heavy-duty vehicles. Change can be difficult, but at VPD, we try to involve everyone in our sustainability strategy. We make thoughtful decisions as a team and bring our drivers into the process of purchasing new vehicles.

Which electric models have you tested in 2024?

Koen: This year, we tested three new models, and we’re planning to try even more. It’s an excellent opportunity for us to gain experience with various brands and types of vehicles in terms of range, driving behavior, and comfort.

The composition of VPD’s fleet

What types of vehicles are in your fleet?

Koen: Our fleet mainly consists of electric vans, such as the Citroën Jumpy, Maxus Panel Van, and Ford E-Transit Panel Van, as well as electric trucks from Scania, Volvo, and Volta Zero. We also have a few combustion engine vehicles for specific tasks, but our goal is to phase them out of our fleet as quickly as possible.

Range, load capacity, and service: the key challenges

What are the most important factors when choosing new vehicles?

Koen: Range, load capacity, and after-sales service are essential. Range determines how far a vehicle can travel without recharging, and we’re seeing continuous improvement in this area. Load capacity is crucial for vans, and solid after-sales service is indispensable: a vehicle that’s out of commission due to technical issues costs the company money.

“We aim to have a future-ready fleet”

How do you compare offers from different suppliers?

Koen: We consistently request quotes for a 60-month lease term and an annual mileage of 50,000 km. Price, maintenance costs, and residual value are all important factors. We also build trusted relationships with suppliers, which helps us negotiate advantageous deals.

A shared commitment to sustainability

How do you ensure that the purchase of new vehicles stays within budget?

Koen: All decisions are made in consultation with management. We aim to be aligned on our choices, and we carefully assess the best options. Our goal is to have a sustainable fleet that is also economically responsible.

The future of logistics: electric and hydrogen?

What is your vision for the future?

Koen: I believe electric vehicles will play a major role in distribution and last-mile deliveries. For long distances, I expect hydrogen will become the preferred solution. As for autonomous vehicles, I’m not yet convinced, but the future may hold surprises.
